It’s a sandbar off of the coast of Destin, Florida, that’s known for being a party hub for locals and tourists from all over the country! What is Crab Island? 

Crab Island is a submerged sandbar located just north of the Destin Bridge in the Choctawhatchee Bay. At high-tide, the sandbar submerges a couple feet below the water, creating a perfect shallow wading pool for visitors to enjoy! Boaters are known to anchor their boats near the island, and spend their afternoon swimming off their boats in the shallow waters. 

How do I get to Crab Island?

Unfortunately, there is no way to drive to Crab Island, which means you’ll have to get a little bit creative when you’re planning your visit. The most popular way to get to Crab Island is by renting a Pontoon Boat. However, we recommend you try out our Crab Island cruise on our Island Runner. They’re especially useful when you have a lot of friends, or just one, due to our public and private options. Best part? We’ll do the driving so you can just relax.

When is the best time to visit Crab Island?

Crab Island is at its busiest from late spring through early fall (May to September). The best time of day to go to Crab Island is mid-morning through mid-afternoon when the tide is high and the water is crystal clear. If you’re looking for a party atmosphere, plan your trip on the weekend. For something more low-key, go on a weekday. Holidays like Memorial Day Weekend and Labor Day Weekend are also incredibly popular and busy times to go.

What should I pack to bring with me?

If you’re planning on visiting Crab Island, pack like you’re going on a day trip. Bring snacks, drinks, and anything else you might need to make yourself more comfortable during your visit. Here’s our packing guide for reference:

Are there bathrooms at Crab Island?

No, silly, you’re in the middle of the ocean! While some shuttles and tour boats may offer private restrooms, you’ll most likely be on your own. However, if you book a cruise such as the Crab Island Runner, you’ll have access to a bathroom on board

Do I have to pay to visit Crab Island?

No, you do not have to pay any money to visit Crab Island, however, you will likely have to pay for the transportation to get to Crab Island. You can check the rates for our Island Runner and book online. You may also want to bring additional money for food vendors at Crab Island! 

Is Crab Island safe for families and children?

Yes, Crab Island is safe for families and children, but be sure to take into consideration the swimming abilities of everyone in your group. Although the water is shallow, it may still be too deep for your littles, which is why we always urge and encourage weak swimmers and children to wear life jackets. Make sure to plan accordingly and keep the weather in mind before you head out to Crab Island. If the forecast is sunny, and you’re well prepared, Crab Island is a safe and fun day trip for you and your family!

Is alcohol sold at Crab Island?

No, however, you can bring your own alcohol or buy some from your boat tour operator.
